Handwriting Difficulties

Handwriting is not an easy skill. It requires the ability to organize and express ideas in the mind. It also requires the ability to get the muscles in the hands and fingers to form those ideas on the paper. Handwriting efficiency requires mastery of multiple skills, including vision, coordinating the eyes, arms, hands, memory, posture, and body control, as well as the task of holding a pencil and forming letters.

Some of the reasons for difficulties are Poor motor skills, Observation skills and imitation skills. Lack of proper guidance from the teachers / parents. It can also be improper pen holding, paper positioning and sitting posture.

Poor handwriting can have a significant effect on school performance and children who lack some of these skills may miss learning opportunities and lack self-esteem. Good Handwriting needs to be practised and requires technique. It has to be taught explicitly.
